TM Leverage — How Translation Memory Reduces Game Localization Cost
TM leverage (Translation Memory leverage) is the cost reduction achieved by reusing previously translated content stored in a Translation Memory (TM). When a source string closely or exactly matches a string already translated in the TM, the TM match is applied at a discounted rate — or free for exact matches — reducing the cost of re-translating repeated or similar content.
How TM Leverage Works
When a new batch of strings is processed against a Translation Memory, each string is compared to all segments stored in the TM. The comparison produces a match percentage: 100% match (exact match) — the source string is identical to a segment in the TM. The existing translation can be applied directly. Typically charged at 0–30% of the full per-word rate. Context match (101% match) — identical source string with identical preceding/following context. Applied at 0% rate (free) by many vendors. Fuzzy match (75–99%) — the source string is similar but not identical to a TM segment. A translator reviews and edits the TM suggestion. Typically charged at 30–75% of the full rate depending on match percentage. No match (0–74%) — no similar segment in the TM. Full translation required at the full per-word rate.
TM Leverage on Game Patches and DLC
TM leverage compounds over time. At the start of a new game project, TM leverage is zero — everything is translated fresh. After the base game ships, the TM contains every translated string. The first DLC or patch applies leverage to all strings that were already in the base game: system messages reused verbatim, UI labels that did not change, tutorial language reused across areas. A DLC sharing 40% of source strings with the base game at 100% match rates reduces translation cost by roughly 30–40% compared to translating the DLC in isolation. A sequel sharing a UI framework and item system with a predecessor game can achieve 50–70% TM leverage on common UI strings from day one. This leverage only applies if the TM is delivered from the original project and available for the new work — which is why TM ownership at project close is a significant contractual and business consideration.
TM Leverage and Quality
High TM leverage is a quality signal as well as a cost signal. Consistent reuse of previously approved translations means character names, item names, and system terms appear identically across the base game and all subsequent content — no inconsistency where a character is called one name in the base game and a different name in DLC because a different translator was used without TM context. For games with rich world-building and established terminology, TM leverage is what makes consistency at scale achievable. Without TM, each new content batch requires re-briefing translators on established terminology or manually reviewing for consistency — significantly more expensive than TM-matched consistency.

It depends on how much content is reused between projects. A sequel sharing a complete UI framework with a predecessor can achieve 40–60% cost reduction on common UI strings. A patch fixing 5% of strings with 95% unchanged achieves near-zero marginal cost for the unchanged strings. First-time projects start at 0% leverage; mature game franchises with multiple titles and maintained TMs achieve the highest leverage. Does TM leverage apply across languages?
TM is language-pair specific: an English-to-Japanese TM contains only Japanese translations of English source strings. It cannot be applied to English-to-German translation. Each language pair maintains its own TM. A project localizing into 10 languages builds 10 separate TMs — one per language pair — all delivered at project close.
Can I bring my existing TM to SandVox from a previous vendor?
Yes. If you have a TM in TMX format (the standard interchange format supported by all major CAT tools), we can import it and apply leverage from day one.
